Nigerian doctors are a rare bread. Despite the weak and poor state of health infrastructure in the country, they have continued to surprise the world and even themselves with their professionalism, dedication and ability to provide good healthcare in the most trying circumstances.
This quality was once again in full display as the country-indeed the world battled the COVID -19 pandemic. Our doctors, in collaboration with other healthcare providers, rose to the challenge of the public health emergency with incredible courage, sacrifice, and can-do-spirit. It is to their eternal credit that all the negative predictions of mass death from the coronavirus did not come to pass, even as the national and sub-national governments are working hard to flatten the curve. Indeed, our doctors and other healthcare personnel have shown demonstrable capacity to handle any public health crisis, and with the right motivation and support can rival the best in any part of the world.
It is, therefore, such a joy to see an encyclopaedia that seeks to profile great Nigerian doctors. The publishers, Dr Nkadi Okocha-Ejeko and I go way back to the medical school and I commend him for this great addition to the library of thought and information on the medical profession in Nigeria. It painstakingly chronicles the exploits Nigerian doctors in academia, politics, business, sports, the traditional institution, and many other sectors. It is a delightful read. Savour it.
